Iranian light

A medium crude oil grade from Iran, used as a regional benchmark in Middle East pricing.

Iranian Light is a medium crude oil grade produced in Iran and historically exported to Asia and Europe. It has moderate API gravity and sulfur content, making it suitable for a wide range of refinery configurations.

In energy markets, Iranian Light has often been priced relative to regional benchmarks, reflecting quality differences and geopolitical risk. Sanctions have played a major role in shaping its availability, pricing, and trade flows.

When sanctions are imposed, Iranian Light volumes are restricted, tightening supply and forcing refiners to source alternative grades. When sanctions ease, re-entry of Iranian barrels can pressure regional crude differentials.

Example: Asian refiners may switch between Iranian Light and similar Middle Eastern grades depending on price, availability, and political constraints. Traders closely monitor diplomatic developments, as changes affecting Iranian Light exports can quickly influence crude balances and regional pricing structures.
